What is a No Trespass Letter?

A  No Trespass letter is a written authorization from a property owner or authorized agent (business owner) asking law enforcement to address people or activities on the property as unauthorized when the owner/agent is unavailable or not present. It gives police permission to enforce trespassing laws on the property when your business is closed.

For a downtown business, property owners may use a No Trespass letter to address issues such as unauthorized camping, loitering, vandalism or theft. These letters also notify SRPD who the primary contact is should their be an issue on site when your building is closed.

What is Changing?

For many years, SRPD typically circulated No Trespass letters to Downtown businesses for their signature. Recent changes to State Law now require all No Trespass letters on file with the Police Department to be notarized. The DAO is working with Sonoma Clean Power to offer notary sessions in September to make this process as easy as possible for Downtown businesses and properties.

 

Why Do I Need A New Letter?

No Trespass letters are only good for a one year period, and need to be renewed annually. If you currently have a No Trespass letter on file and it isn't notarized, it is not enforceable. The DAO will aim to coordinate this effort every fall moving forward to ensure letters do not expire.

Attend a Notary Session at Sonoma Clean Power

Bring your driver's license and attend one of two notary sessions being offered by Sonoma Clean Power. There will be blank letters on hand for you to complete and all letters will be delivered to SRPD after each session.
